American college sport is a major enterprise and plays a significant role in American culture with most households supporting one university team or another. There are over 400,000 student athletes competing annually for universities across the country, many of whom are fortunate enough to receive some of the $3 Billion in scholarship awards made available for talented sportsmen & women each year.
Unlike anywhere else in the world, in the United States today, many college sports are extremely popular on a national scale; securing prime broadcast and print coverage and elevating the top performing student-athletes to a position of national recognition and fame.
Life as a student-athlete is a challenging one where individuals must balance the roles of being a full-time student and a full-time athlete simultaneously, typically for a period of four years. The goal for every student-athlete is to graduate with a university degree, although, for some, there will be the opportunity to progress to the professional ranks in their sport.
